Projects co working space - Marketing design

I had a great short partnership with a local co working space in Brighton. In 2018, The Projects was a new co working space set to be launched. During a networking event, I connected with Alex Young and had really good discussion about using illustration for branding and marketing design project. Alex Young and her team wanted to get the local community involved with multiple projects.

So I agreed to partner with the community team and the manager, Beth lewis, to create marketing material for one its early events.

Discovery and message

The Projects’ value proposition is bringing people together to create something great. This value influenced me to research their branding and visuals. Its existing material featured imagery of dynamic people playing sports. My creative mind was inspired by the imagery but I wanted to put a compelling twist. I researched the 1950s dance scene and then successfully proposed the theme to the projects team.

For this project specifically, getting the balance between my style and the project’s existing branding identity was hard. Many character and poster designs were conceptualised and scrapped. Either they looked too busy or did not work with the text. Finally I found the right poses and images on Pintrests that reflect the best creative direction. I wanted the illustration to bring a sense of bringing everyone together to create new possibilities.

Design and execution

The illustrations focused on portraying their happy hours events as great opportunities that brings members together. The graphic illustrations include things associated with happy hour and use those vintage imagery to create something unique. From this commission 2 illustrations posters were built for print and social media. This was great way of offer artwork that can be repurposed and feedback for this approach was great.

Working with Projects was an adventure to experience how to partner with clients to provide value. Just before 2nd lockdown, Alex Young’s successor, Sophia, approached me to discuss designing a vinyl print for the Project’s cafe. But the lockdown cancelled the project.

Reflections on project

Knowing that I made a difference and created a positive design material, means a lot. If there was a name one great project, the word positive was it. I was event featured on the members sections blog back in 2019. Staying in contact with them has been awesome and cannot wait to bring more positive playful work.

“We worked with Terry on the promotion material for our members’ Happy Hour. As a new brand, this could have been a challenge but Terry made the whole process really easy and worked diligently to get exactly what we needed done.

Terry is extremely talented and we were delighted with the creative input he gave, the finished images were exactly what we wanted and captured our space, our members and the style of event perfectly. ”
